Dog Of The Month

Ava is a female purebred German Shepherd who weighs about 50 pounds. Her estimated age is six years old, although we were told she was only two when we rescued her. Ava was an emergency rescue. Our vet called us pleading to save a shepherd set to deliver babies any minute. Poor Ava had spent her life in an outdoor pen, having litter after litter of puppies, none of whom survived because they were born either in the sub-zero winter temperatures or the high summer heat indexes. How Ava survived the ordeal is unknown. I said yes to taking Ava in and then scrambled to get ready for the delivery of puppies, building a whelping box, stocking up on medical supplies, etc. X-Rays told us to expect at least five pups, but we got eight! Ava was an excellent mommy, but had some things to learn about being a house-dog and needed some time to come back to health due to malnourishment and having multiple litters. House-training is coming along, with only the occasional accident. Ava gets along with most dogs, but needs a slow introduction. She has a high prey drive, so does not mix well with kitties or small dogs. If you are considering a rescue dog, bringing Ava home will truly allow you to say you saved a life and gave a neglected animal the chance to live out the rest of her live in indoor comfort! Ava is spayed, microchipped and fully vetted.
